Writing prompts for the language-learner

Some topics to write about in a foreign language (or in your own, if you’re bored.) It’s best to be as descriptive as possible so you get the most practice out of them.

  1. Describe your room or home.
  2. What do you hope to do once you’re fluent in this language? What are some interesting experiences you’ve already had with this language?
  3. What are things that you like or dislike about your country and its culture?
  4. How do you dress, and has your style changed with time?
  5. What is your favorite holiday, and what are things you’ve done or usually do on this holiday?
  6. Why did you choose this language?
  7. Are there any other languages you want, or have wanted, to learn? If so, why?
  8. If you’ve ever stayed in another country, what were the people, environment, and culture like? Did you enjoy your trip?
  9. What’s on your bucket list?
  10. If you opened a restaurant, what would you serve and how would you decorate it?
  11. Do you enjoy school? Why or why not?
  12. What are/were your classes, teachers, and students like at school? Did you have any favorite classes, and if so, why? Did they serve lunch there, and if so, how was it?
  13. Describe your daily routine.
  14. What’s your favorite book or film about, and why do you like it?
  15. What do you think of other people? Are you a loner, or do you hang out a lot? What are your views on humanity as a whole—are you more cynical or trusting?
  16. What’s your favorite place to visit or be in? How does it look, and what is it like?
  17. What’s your favorite season and kind of weather, and why? What do you do when they come?
  18. If you had one chance to time-travel anywhere, what would you do with it?
  19. What’s the place you live in like? What about the cities near you?
  20. What’s the worst book or film you know? Why?
  21. What is something that you find overrated?
  22. Are there any quotes you’ve read that you deeply relate to, or which have had an impact on you? If so, why?
  23. What is something you wish you had in your life right now? (Not necessarily something tangible.)
  24. What are your friends or family like? What are things you like and dislike about them? How did you meet your friends?
  25. Describe your favorite memory.
  26. If you could make three wishes to change anything in the world, and have them granted, what would your wishes be?
  27. What hobbies do you have, and how were you introduced to them?
  28. How have your worldviews changed in the last few years, and why?
  29. Have you ever been to a place you’d never like to visit again? If so, what was it and why?
  30. What’s a major flaw that you see in society?
  31. If you could relive any part of your life again, which part would it be and why?
  32. What’s something that happened recently that made you laugh?
  33. What’s something you think everyone should try?
